Spotlight on April Trevino, Unit Manager for Villa’s Stepping Stones Memory Care community
Staff are the backbone of Villa’s organization and the key to providing top notch, compassionate care that gives families the peace of mind that their loved ones are safe, engaged and well-cared for. Villa South is blessed to have an amazing group of long-tenured employees as well as welcoming to newer staff who share the mission and values of Villa Assisted Living. Today’s spotlight is on April Trevino, Unit Manager for Villa’s Stepping Stones Memory Care community.

Villa South has unusually long tenure in two of its key leadership positions. April’s mom Hope and Aunt Mary Rose were Unit Managers of the Assisted Living and Memory Care sections of Villa. With the exception of a stint at age 17 at Little Caesar’s, Villa is the only place that April has worked. April was initially trained as a caregiver, then as a housekeeper before becoming the Activity Director. April says, “I was always put in Stepping Stones because I loved the work there. The residents needed more help with ADLs (activities of assisted living) and that was my calling.” About a decade ago, April took the helm as Stepping Stones Manager where she resides today.
“April cares about her residents as she does about her own family members. She is compassionate and is an advocate for her residents. April is an asset to the Villa because she is a team player and assists where needed.”
Executive Director Mary Martinez
It is impressive that April has followed in her mother’s footsteps as a Villa unit manager. Hope Trevino says,
“As April’s mother, I am very proud of the woman she has become and the hard worker that she is. She was brought up with strict morals and hard work ethics. She cares deeply for her residents in Stepping Stones. April advocates for her residents to make sure they get quality care and the services they need. She takes care of her residents as if they were her family members. She is very responsible and loveable and easy to work with.”
April’s daily tasks include oversight of the Stepping Stones memory care unit including training and education of care attendants and medication aides, coordination with activity staff, ordering resident medications, assessing new residents, and doing rounds with Wellness Director Stephanie Lozano. Long-time Executive Director and now retired Operations VP Dolly Broadus said that she was super impressed with how April has run the Stepping Stones unit.
April says, “Stepping Stones is unique in that residents gather in one place and tend to interact throughout the day with each other. Many don’t have families here and we are their family.”
April is excited about the transformation of the Memory Care activity programs and sees a big change in both resident and staff engagement with them. April sees a key change is that few residents are asking to go back to their apartments to nap after lunch — they stay engaged with the brain games and other activities throughout the afternoon.
April has two adult children, a son (24) and daughter (20) plus a 2-year old Layla with husband Clay. Layla, who keeps her quite busy, is now starting gymnastics. In her free time, April likes to relax at the beach.
“April has been an essential part of our caregiving team, bringing compassion, patience, and professionalism to every shift. April goes above and beyond to ensure our resident’s feel safe, respected and valued. Whether it’s assisting with daily activities, providing companionship, or offering emotional support to families, April demonstrates a deep commitment to person centered care. ”
