Healthy Living Tips
from the Villa Assisted Living Care Team
Spotlight on Robin Cohea, Activity Director and Outreach Coordinator
Activity Director Robin Cohea is a key member of our Villa leadership team, tasked with overseeing Villa’s Life Enrichment and Activities programming in the Assisted Living and Stepping Stones Memory Care sections of the Villa. Social interaction is vital to a senior’s well-being. At Villa, residents can exercise their minds and body with regularly scheduled entertainment, classes, and social functions that might include:
Exercise classes
• Sunday worship
• Happy Hour
• Villa choir
• Art therapy
• Bingo
• Lunch Bunch
• Birthday celebrations
• Holiday entertainment

Robin’s heart and compassion for seniors plus her ingenuity in re-designing / re-imagining our Activities Program has made a huge impact on both Assisted Living and Memory Care residents’ lifestyle and enjoyment. As a dementia-certified Activity Director who has previously worked in the senior living industry.
Robin could retire herself, but is having too much fun to even think about retiring, stating,
“The residents make me happy every day! But I also adore my co-workers. Every time I see one of them working one-on-one with one of our residents, it fills my heart with so much pride that we, as caretakers and I include myself, we become their friends, their family, and we get to know their family member, their extended family members. They get to know our families, we tell them about our grandchildren. It’s just like coming to a little vacation spot every day. People wonder, ‘what are you doing still working?’ I can’t quit – and if I do, I’d just sign myself up as a volunteer. So I’ll always be connected to the Villa.”
Robin, with the support of Executive Director Mary Martinez and Wellness Director Stephanie Lozano LVN, has re-imagined the Stepping Stones Memory Care community with a 4-step Formula for a Successful, Happy Day in Stepping Stones. Villa’s Activity Room daily schedule for residents consists of the four-part formula listed below. There is a daily Activity schedule consisting of 4 components: Cognitive, Physical, Physical, Art Therapy and Social. Stepping Stones also has a Theater Room schedule directed towards dementia residents on hospice and those that need quiet time.
The activity programs of Assisted Living and Stepping Stones include overlap and complimentary components. This synergy between programs allows assisted living residents with minor cognitive issues to benefit from the extra attention and focus provided by the specialized brain games and other daily Stepping Stones programming. In turn, this allows for some Stepping Stones memory care residents to come to assisted living to participate is some activities, providing a welcome ‘change of setting’ that enriches the experience. This cross utilization of programs can also help ease a transition for residents who may be close to a point of moving from assisted living to a specialized Memory Care/Alzheimer’s unit when it is needed, or beneficial.
“Robin becomes best friends with families and residents. She is very welcoming and connects with people very naturally.”
Executive Director Mary Martinez
While Robin is not a native Texan, she says she arrived in this great state at the age of six and plans to never leave. Robin’s past work is an indication of her public service orientation. This includes being the Volunteer Coordinator for the Volunteer Center of the Coastal Bend where she served on the Crisis Intervention Board for six years. During her tenure there, Robin won the Sexual Assault Victim Counselor of the year in 1986. She also ran the Graffiti Wipe out program and worked with the National Violence Prevention Resource Center locally in gang prevention and intervention.
Robin was in the class of 87, Navy Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program but decided she didn’t want to be an instructor after all. She was Resource Development Director at Communities In Schools for about 5 years before retiring. Robin served as PTA President for 3 years, and later served on the PTA local council. She also served on the Board of Family Outreach for 3 years where she taught parenting classes.
In her free time, Robin keeps up with 5 grandsons and training two rescue dogs. We are fortunate to have Robin on the Villa Leadership Team!
“Robin is a comfort and joy to be around. She connects with families and residents organically and ease, is a comfort and joy to be around. She connects with families and residents organically and ease.”
Wellness Director Stephanie Lozano
Robin’s enthusiasm and love of seniors shines through in her daily routine. When you visit Villa you will meet with Robin and have the opportunity to discuss your loved one’s background, interests and social preferences. Once moved in, a core part of our Villa program is Robin doing a social or activity assessment resident profile so we can make sure the resident has an engaging environment suited to their needs. Any questions, please email Robin at RobinC@VillaAssistedLiving.com or call her at 361-446-1829. You will be delighted by Robin’s warm personality and vision for her residents’ well-being.
